I'd have gone way back to the very ancient times, when the first notions of a family were born. That was the first time people created groups amongst likes. This, i guess, resulted in the further formation of tribes, nations, continents, communities, religions, and what-nots? I'd have stopped the formation of the first family, and might have had only two levels of the society.
The individual and the world. :)

Tough question. Things on a time travel to-do list:
1. Successfully warn President Lincoln
2. Successfully Warn Pearl Harbor
3. Prevent the Susquehanna Corporation from shutting down the North Shore Line
4. Prevent Jimmy Carter from ever reaching the White House, except as a tourist
5. Prevent the first WTC attack
6. Prevent 9/11
Jeez. Where to start?

There are quite a lot of things I'd change, such as preventing Hitler or Stalin or Mao from coming to power and killing millions. Accelerating cures from diseases such as polio, malaria, yellow fever, influenza, AIDS. But from a purely historical event to be changed, I would choose the assassination of Lincoln to never have happened. I would have liked to have seen the changes brought about during reconstrction under his watch. Who knows? He could have been the first 3-term President, or more.

I would abolish any thought of slavery from the human mind --- even as a concept it would not be allowed to exist.
