Depends on what you are seeking in.
For example, mechanical engineers require 4 years of bachelors, plus 1 year of another 45 credits of course work for masters, and then 2 years research for Ph.D. It's usually between 7-8 years.
Or for like M.d, the time required is much greater. Like you need your bachelor's in general science first (or any other compatible major), then something like a residency or internship for a year or two, and more course work, and then you get your Ph.D. it's somewhere between 8-10 years.

You need a bachelors degree before you can enter a PhD program. A bachelors degree takes four years.
A PhD program usually takes anywhere between 4 and 7 years, depending on your field of study.
A PhD program usually includes 2 (rarely more) years of coursework, 1 year of language exams and qualifying exams, and 1-2 years of researching, writing, and defending your dissertation.
