The younger generation software and hardware engineers are way too fast and ahead of most of us "elderly people" (not necessarily YOU, in case you are an exception. I am only referring to averages). The IT industry also, gives preference to fresh youngsters with aptitude.

I would suggest you to ask yourself first why you want to go towards IT. You already have a firm ground and solid experience in your own field. The best thing is to go towards the hardware side of IT for you.Look into the area of hardware re pare, installation and troubleshooting since you already know a lot about electrical and electronic stuff.
Remember not to confuse IT with Computer Science since IT is more closer to Management. If you have a background in assembly language programming,C or C++ then again i will advise you to explore the career of Embedded Systems or Microelectronics.
And if you are willing to go towards Software Development then do your Masters in this field. It will provide you a firm ground in Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD).Alternatively, follow the track of Java certification on www.java.sun.com.Java developers are high in demand in the market and will remain for the coming 10 years at least.
Wish you best of luck with your career!
