Not as interesting as say FUBAR, which can never be properly translated to the civilians but basically that means:

But my personal favorite is BOHICA:

Absent WithOut Leave - means a person in military service is away from their base without permission of the commander. The most common reason for being AWOL is going off base on payday, getting drunk and forgetting to report back on time.
Incidentally, the term 'AWOL' is used because AWL is already in use and means 'Absent *With* Leave.'

Absent Without Official Leave ... meaning not obtaining permission to be off duty for pre-determined amout of time...or out of uniform. Being charged with being "AWOL" is a serious offense. Punishable by reprimand or up to and including dishonorable discharge.

Who's gone along and given all the right answers the thumbs down?
The O does stand for 'official'.
It does come from the military and it does mean absent without official leave.

Absent Without Leave- if you're in the military and no one gives you permission to leave base, then they say, "you went AWOL"
