What do you think that means. If the bank never got it on that deposit date.

I'd phone the bank and ask for a better explanation.

You need to contact the person/company who was going to do direct deposit on that date. Some deposits are held in limbo for a 'clearance' period. In other words the bank receives the interest on your money, bank profit for doing the transaction.
Contact your bank to find out why it has not registered and if there is a 'waiting' period.
Given it was deposited and can be proven that it was by the person/company (receipted) deposited into your account, it is up to the bank to find it.
Perhaps wrong account numbers were put in and it has gone to someone else's bank account. Mistakes like this do happen.
Do the paperchase to find out where it is.
