Because the design was getting old and they didn't feel they could keep selling it.

They actually didn't discontinue it. In Europe, the Fox is another name for the Lupo, which is still in production. The North American Fox was a rebadge of the Brazilian Gol (not Golf), later generations of which are still in production.

The FOX was not considered a very reliable model and was produced in Brazil as a bare bones alternative to the more expensive Jetta.

I think it was because they brought out the Golf 1 and it was more popular and the fox just faded away. No point in manufacturing a car that doesn't sell.

They broke down easily and had a bad reputation. Even when they made them more reliable, no one bought them because of their reputation.
