A coal-fired power station generates electrical power for the national grid.

Explain how the energy from the coal is used to generate electricity !?

Cole is first fired and the generated heat is used to boil water in the boiler. then the Very high pressure steam is used to turn giant turbines and electricity is generated

Coal is a combustible, a powerful one which, when combusted can generate enough heat to make iron and steel go liquid. Since The first power plants where built it was used on steam-based generator, it would boil water generating steam and the pressure would impulse a generator move and go around and around converting it's inside magnetic field into electricity.
Thermal and geothermal plants alike this are still being used thougth they are contaminating and relatively unefficient but they are cheaper and generate power for small cities or towns. I think there is a project for to develop sun-based thermal plants, in which case they would boil water by concetrating sun energy in one given point making them cleaner
