first multiply each of the terms in parentheses by the outside number
(1/5 x 25) - (1/5 x 5k) = 21 - (3 x k) - (3 x (-4)) note the minus has to go before each factor that you're multiplying.
(25/5) - (5k/5) = 21 - 3k - (-12) now simplify 5 - k = 21 -3k +12 (note minus +minus = plus)
5-k=33-3k now put the k together in one side and the numbers together on the other side (note: when you change one number to the other side its signal changes also, if it's positive becomes negative and vice-versa) so you'll get 3k-k=33-5
do the math 2k=28 now divide both sides by 2 so you can cancel the 2 on the left side 2k/2=28/2 do the math k=14

1/5(25-5k)=21-3(k-4)?
25/5 - 5k/5 = 21 - 3k + 12
5 - k = 21 - 3k + 12
-k + 3k = 21 + 12 -5
2k = 28
k = 28/2
k = 14
Solution: {k elements of R | k = 14}
