There were many complaints when Windows 95 came out about how it wasted a lot of disk space. The solution, we heard, was to physically partition the disk into two or more drives. How did that accomplish anything?

I've been supporting Windows since 3.1 and I can't say I've heard that before. Older versions of Windows (95/98/ME) worked with FAT16 or FAT32 file systems. PC's that had Windows 95 stood a good chance of using FAT16 which is limited to 2GB. So whatever you heard, it might really be about NTFS versus FAT.

The older versions of Windows also didn't make good use of virtual memory (page file and memory addresses), which is why you should avoid using more than 512MB of RAM. This problem was resolved in Windows 2000.

Try to be more specific on what the "problem" is with disk space that you're referring to. From the surface, it doesn't appear to be a "real" issue. It certainly doesn't make sense to divide a hard drive into more than one partition in order to prevent wasted space. That's absurd!
