what would cause this to happen?

files corrupted means that the MP3 player is trying to read the file ( song ) but can't. If these are new files you transferred to your player I'd try to transfer them again. If they are files that were on your player before and they used to play correctly then you might have problems with your unit.

it means that the file you are trying to play did not download completely or something like that

This usually means that the file wasn't fully downloaded or correctly downloaded. try re-downloading, it should work
