BURNS
Your skin is a protective barrier to infection, and any loss of skin, however small, is susceptible to infection. any burn bigger than a 50 cent coin, you must seek medical attention. If the burn is bigger than the casualty's hand then call an ambulance immediately.
Management of a burn
* Cool burnt area (minimum 10-20 minutes cold running water or until no further pain is felt)
* Remove jewellery
* Cover with sterile non -stick dressing
* Seek medical help urgently.
DO NOT
- Apply lotions, oily dressings (butter)
- Prick / break blisters
- Give alcohol to drink
- Over-cool casualty (shock)
- Use cotton wool, adhesive dressings etc.
on burn.
If you have no non stick dressing use glad wrap, it acts as a second skin and will also protect the skin from infection.
The reason why we;
Don't apply creams, Makes it hard for doctors to assess for the burn properly.
Don't break or burst blisters - Increase the risk of infection.
Don't give alcohol - Increase shock.
Don't use cotton wool or adhesive dressing - Is they stick to burn and hard to remove.

so far you've done everything right.
for now the best thing for it is aloe vera gel. you can put it in the fridge to help cool it-the coldness will be soothing for the burn. apply the gel as often as necessary. wrap the hand in gauze after applying the gel to help keep it from rubbing off and to also help keep the burn from getting infected.
do not apply any creams,lotions,ointments, or food products (as scary/stupid as that sounds-people will recommend it). these all trap heat and germs and can make the burn worse.
for pain-if she is over age 12 the she can take regular strength ibuprofen. take 200-400mg every 4-6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.
if she is under 12-children's motrin works best. follow the instructions for dosage written on the box. do not exceed 4 doses in 24 hours.
watch it for signs of infection
-the burn becomes more red or swollen
-it begins to drain liquid of any sort
-she begins to run a fever of 100.5 or higher
if the burn is infected-she'll need antibiotics to treat it.
but as long as she keeps it covered and applies the aloe vera gel-it should heal just fine. after it has scabbed over and is a light pink color-she can start using vitamin E oil to minimize scarring
hope she feels better

I'm an RN - the only thing that will really make the burn feel better immediately is ALOE VERA GEL. Get some quick. Take 2 tylenol now for the discomfort. Keep it cool - you did the right thing with the cold water.

Sounds like she has 1st or 2nd degree burns. She needs to put her hand in a bowl or zip lock bag of ice water and get to the emergency room right away. With burns this bad it can get infected right away. She needs to go in and get treatment with burn cream and gauze. Do not mess around with this. Have her take Advil or Alieve for the pain and go to the hospital.

She should take some ibuprofen and use a first aid cream on it. If it looks really bad she may need to get it checked out at urgent care tonight yet.

Do not allow the blisters to pop. Wrap it loosely in a clean cloth and call 911 and have them tell you how to treat it.
