yes
exactly you did the right thing....
go to staples and ask for PC3200 RAM, honestly.. no ill tell you what to do.. Because i work at stapels...
take your Model number of your computer, write it down, and give it an associate.. they will go to staples.com and use the memory wizard to find the RAM for you... They will most likely see that you will need the PC3200 like you have found out.. but they will always have the other specs on your computer, like processors and what not to better assist you..
you can message me for any other questions...
also, if you have 256 and XP, upgrading to 512 will show a big difference....
NOW, there is a computer on special buy at staples that cost 250 for the tower and 350 for the whole set up check that out...
haha, i work at staples if u cant tell..
anyway, any questions ask me...

open your computer case after you have powered it off and disconnected it from the mains.
now look at the ram modules in your system.
pc2700 = ddr sdram 333mhz (for example)
whatever the details are on the chip before or after the 256MB is what you put in to look for matching ram.
alternatively if you know the brand of your computer (HP, Dell or acer for example) then email them and ask for upgrade information.
if you know the brand and model nyumber of your motherboard (acer use MSI motherboards for example, well the old acer i had had an MSI board).
once you know the make and model of the board you can use the companies website to look up the details you need as far as upgrades go.
ddr ram comes in two main pin varieties in a dexktop sytem 184 and 200 pin ( if i recall correctly).
you need to know what you are doing.
if in doubt you need to go to a professional and have them look at your computer and make a recomendation and or fit the ram fior you.
however so you are not ripped off, go to http://www.dabs.com and look up the ram on that site. i hope that helps.
crucial.com or is it crucial.co.uk have a memory check tool to advise on what ram you need for your system. you can run the tool free. and then buy crucial Ram i use crucial ram in both my systems and i have never had a problem with any crucial memmory modules. good luck. i hope that helps.

Look up the specifications of your machine.
It will state which type of memory it has, also the maximum capacity.
More Ram will only make your machine open programs faster, if it's speed that your after, I'm afraid that this is controlled by the CPU (the processor).
Ultimately you may need to upgrade or buy a new machine!

If you put a 512MB and a 256MB ram in your machine you will not get 768MB, your 512MB ram will lower its self and run at 256MB, it would be best to use 512MB ram on it own, or match it with exactly the same ram (e.g. 2x 256 or 2x 512)
hope this has helped

All you need to buy is a DDR RAM nothing else, even Blah Blah Blah versions, and you must arrange your RAM respectively to your RAM Slots starting from Higher to Lower...
