Well, they were the children of a poor woodcutter. The mother (or in some versions the step-mother) convinces the father to abandon the kids in the forest. Nice lady, huh? They leave a trail of pebbles to follow home... and 'mom' has dad once again abandon them in the forest.

The major crime is abandonment. Since the story takes place in the Middle Ages, we can't view it with modern eyes. The parents were fearing starvation for themselves and the children - there was no Welfare State then. Clearly, it was a nasty thing to do, but the desperation would have been much more acute then than now (in the devleoped world, anyway).

The version I am aware of didn't include a mother, it included a stepmother and it was her idea to abandon the children because they couldn't afford to feed them and she wanted to put themselves before the children. She pressured the father to go along with it. They were abandoned in the woods. When they escaped, they reunited with the father and the step mother had died. It has been suggested that the stepmother and the witch were one in the same. This is the only version I have ever read.

Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale of Germanic origin, adapted by the Brothers Grimm and earlier by Giambattista Basile.

When they abandoned their children in the wood, they assume that the children will die because they won`t found something to eat. That might lead to say they try to murder their children.
Hope you can understand my bad English.
