The only tip I can give you, having grown mine out before, is go to a barber and let them know what you're looking to do. They can give you maintenance cuts to keep you looking neat.

You could even get someone else to give you a hand with a pair of clippers. Just keep the back of your head/neck clean.

And just keep remembering, it'll all get easier when you can tuck it behind your ears :)

I don't see why you'd need it cut a certain way. Let it grow out then have your ends trimmed. That helps promote hair growth and keeps your ends healthy.

Use a good shampoo and conditioner to promote good hair growth try stimulating your scalp with a good brush every once in awhile too also trim your ends when you need to but not too much otherwise it'll be useless cause your hair will be short again

There's not really much to say, plus it depends on how fast your hair grows. Once you know that, you know how many inches you can spare to get split ends dealt with if/when they show up. ;-)
In any case, good luck.
