I am currently looking for a job and I've come across this a few times. So would someone get the job instead of me simply because they have indian in them, even if I was a better candidate?

Indian casinos were allowed to proliferate to generate jobs specifically for Native Americans, and, some reservation services are just for tribal members so the tribe writes the employment rules.

Usually if there is a qualified Native American applying, a non-Indian could not be hired no matter their qualifications.

This is allowable under federal law thru part of our Treaty agreements with them and has been the case for over twenty years. It is true in Calif., New Mexico, AZ, Alaska, Colorado, UT, Minn, the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, OR, Wash., Wyoming, etc.

If you are going to be living in OK or the west, better understand Indian law a little. It can get to you if you don't understand the background.

Think this is frustrating western law? In the west a homeowner cannot retain the rainwater falling on their own land.

It's easy to think "two wrongs don't make a right," especially when you're on the disadvantaged end for once. But at least, unlike the decades of discrimination minorities have faced in this country, the ads come right out and admit it.

It makes sense to me that an N.A. casino would want N.A. workers, if they are otherwise comparable to non N.A. workers... kind of like how it's understandable Hooters would hire women with big boobs and a German restaurant might prefer blonde workers.

Does it kind of bite? Sure! But, as someone above me pointed out, it would have to bite a lot worse, and for far more people, to even begin to compensate for how badly the situation for N.A.'s has been. Just read up on the Trail of Tears. Until we can find balance to everyone's satisfaction, just do what white folks have told the minorities to do for generations--be so damned good at what you do, they'll want you no matter what color your skin is.

Sadly, this is still the age of affirmative action (which although has some great points CAN be very abused).

Note that it said "Preference." They're not only looking for Native American. It's just a preference. However, you might want to check on "why" they have that preference: is it for the appearance of culture diversity? some kind of knowledge it's assumed a person of native american ancestry would have (unlikely)? or some other reason?

Well, as a tribe owned casino...who else do the visitors hope to see working there? And if not then they'd probably complain, like I recently saw someone do here on this site. So, even if it seems unfair I can see why their first preference might be someone who fits that description.

basically, yes.

Actually, they will only get preference for the job if you are equally qualified, but they are native american.

nope ,first of all it's against the law to discriminate against race ,religion.
Unless you live in Oklahoma, they get everything for free ,housing, school, college ,free lunch's,free grocery's free school supplies,Americans feel they done Indian's wrong so to compensate, they feel responsible for the rest of their lives .
