Back in Bible days.. Some people that believed in Jesus, Got killed. For believing he was the son of God.
The Apostles were often referred to as "fishers of men". Followers of Christianity were called Pisciculi; the root of this Latin word is "fish". The symbols of "sacremental fish, with wine and a basket of bread represents the Eucharist and the Last Supper in Christian art." 2 The symbol was simple to draw and was often used among Christians as a type of password during times of persecution by the Roman government. If two strangers met and were unsure whether each other was a Christian, one would draw an arc in the earth like:). If the other were a Christian, they would complete the symbol with a reverse arc: (), forming the outline of a fish.
Now people with the fish on cars. Are showing the world. The Believe in God.

To indicate that they are Christians. Most people believe that a fish represents Christianity because Jesus and his followers were fishermen. Not the case. The fish means Jesus in Greek.
Wild? Look it up.

The Meaning of the ICHTHUS Fish Symbol
Long ago, the earliest followers of Jesus were persecuted and forced to worship in hidden locations. Often these believers would scratch the secret symbol of a fish on the ground to help them identify other Christians. Fish was also a common food of the day, often used and referenced by Jesus during His ministry. In addition, the fish symbol relates to Mark 1:17 "Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."
The Greek spelling for the word fish is "ICHTHUS" (pronounced ikh-thoos) and was incorporated into the meaning of the fish symbol. ICHTHUS is an acronym coming from the first letters of the Greek phrase "Iesous, Christos, Theou, Uios, Soter" which spell out a secret message about our Lord. The individual letters ÎΧÎΥΣ are the first letters of five Greek words each of which means "Jesus Christ, God, Son and Savior".
Î - Iota, the first letter in the Greek word Iesous, meaning Jesus
Χ - Chi, the first letter in the Greek word Christos, meaning Christ
Î - Theta, the first letter in the Greek word Theou, meaning God
Î¥ - Upsilon, the first letter in the Greek word Uios, meaning Son
Σ - Sigma, the first letter in the Greek word Soter, meaning Savior
Today Christians still use the fish as a symbol of their Christianity and to help spread the message of Jesus Christ. It transcends differences in cultures and denominations. Throughout generations the fish symbol continues to identify the true followers of Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus brings the power of life and salvation. In a word, the name of Jesus captures the central message of the Christian faith. Together with the symbol of the fish, this emblem reminds the world that our faith isn't about religion, but a relationship with the Living God through Jesus Christ.

It is an ancient Christian symbol that was the recognised secret icon of Christ the prophets followers. In times of Roman persecution they would draw this symbol in the sand, when they met to prove that they were followers.
It has recently been adopted by fundamental sects of Christianity in particular those who promote the "born again"
new age aspect of belief.
I think it is rather ironic in a particularly Christian way.
