keep shutting off?also the tube that connects to the pilot has a small leak. could that be why? should i stop trying to use the heater?

You probably have a bad thermocouple. The thermocouple is a safety device that shuts off the gas in the absence of a pilot flame. The tip of the thermocouple should be right in the pilot flame at all times. Have the thermocouple replaced, and your wall furnace should be okay.

If your furnace has a leak and is not the primary heater to the house, of course shut it down until it's fixed. It sounds like the thermocouple needs replacing too.

That leak is the problem. The pilot burner and it's orifice probably need cleaning as well. Call someone for service. It most likely is not a very expensive repair.

When it comes to natural gas, I call my local natural gas provider. They'll come out and check out the appliance and tell you what is wrong, usually at no charge.
