If the service is as expected, I tip 10%...
If the service is good, I tip 15%..
If the service is really good, I tip 20%....
I tipped 100% once at a 5 star resteraunt with a waiter who knew all the classic signals. (IE: He does not return to the table to take orders until the man drinks from his water glass....you have to be know all of the formal signals for this. Most waiters in the USA do not expect Americans to know this, so it is rare to find it.)
If the service is bad, I ask to talk to the manager, tell him why, then tip 2 CENTS. A "two cent tip" is a real insult and you should give specific reasons why you felt the service was that poor. IE: you ordered a veggie pizza and the waiter brought a meat lovers. You ordered a steak well done and it came dripping blood. The waiter is responsible for seeing that you get what you ordered, even if the chef/cook screws up. Really be sure as to your order and comments as complaining about bad service can get a waiter fired....

I've never worked in the business, but I usually tip 20% depending on service/friendliness. Even if the food is terrible, I'll tip 20% as long as the waiter is friendly. They work hard and have bills to pay and children to take care of just like everybody else.

I usually tip 20% or over. I don't calculate it every time, but usually it's the change from the meal plus a couple extra dollars.
I've never worked in a restaurant, because I don't have the patience to deal with people like that, so I think they should absolutely be compensated for doing a job I could never do.

i have worked as a waitress for several years, the average tip i get is about £5 on a £35 bill. it depends on the service, the better it is the bigger it is. the best tips i ever got was for a huge new years eve party i worked, i had about 14 very wealthy people and ended the evening with about £1114 to share between my work station - it was in a big 5 star hotel - which was my second waiter - slave - myself and my wine waiter.
i would say it depends on where you dine - posh restaurant, or cafe but mostly on how happy you are with the service.
it is a really demanding job, especially when you get a bunch or a**holes come in.... my biggest suggestion is to be nice to your waitress / waiter, they are the people serving your food - have you seen the movie waiting....

I tip starting at 20%. It can go up from there or it can go down. Depends on the service. I will not pay for poor service. take my order, get the order right and check on me as to if I want another beer or desert before you bring the check and you get 20%. Only on a couple of occasions have I tipped 0. Get the order wrong and then argue with me that I never ordered it when I specifically asked for it twice and you get zip and will more than likely lose your job. I ask for very very little. What little I do ask for I expect.
Never worked in the industry.

I usually tip between 15-25% - depending on the quality of service and kind of resteraunt. I worked in the food service industry in high school. I also always make sure to point out excellent waitstaff to managers - it seems it's such a rare quality anymore & it should be recognized!

The waiters @ the restaurant I wokr always complain that black people and indians (native americans) never tip good... they leave like 2 dollars on a 60 dollar bill. Anyway, I'm not surprised...
I always tip because I've worked and do work in a restaurant, I tip depending on how the service was.

I work as a server at Steak n' Shake, and we get a lot of people who tip very poorly. The tips are pretty much my wages. I get a check of around $40 every two weeks. I have a boyfriend who works at Outback Steakhouse as a server, and he has to pay tip share (3% of his total sales) for the busboys and hostesses. When people stiff him, not only are they not paying his wages, but he has to pay to serve them. I always try to be generous, and I don't ever leave less than two dollars if there's two or less in my party. If your service really is terrible, that's something else, but if it's busy, try to be patient.

I used to be a Hostess at Red Lobster, but that was like 3 years ago.
I ALWAYS tip, even if the service sucks- because I understand that everybody has a bad day. But it depends on how good the service is on how good I will tip. I mean like, a few days before christmas, my boyfriend and I were at chilis, and they weren't busy or anything- but our waiter was just awesome. Really friendly, chatty, good service- so he got like a 20 dollar tip. It's all about the attitude.
