I have a fish tank with about 6 fish, including a red fin shark, so I was just wondering.

On most sites that talk about Red Fin Sharks, they are often referenced as an aggressive fish, and it is often stated that you can keep no more than one lone Red Fin Shark in an aquarium. I do not agree as I have several in my tank and they do fine.

Although they will chase one another, and will occasionally bite the tail fins, I think the majority of this chasing is aggressive playing. When they are doing so, their dorsal fin stands up sharply and they chase each other around exhibiting a similar behavior of other animals when they are at play.

I do think that if you choose to keep Red Fin Sharks, it is better to keep them only. I also believe that a tank containing at least three sharks will do better than a tank with less. I don't even have algae eaters in my tank since the amount of algae they actually consume does very little to control it anyway, and I don't have to concern myself with the sharks aggressiveness towards them if such behavior actually took place.

I did have other fish in my tank at one time including algae eaters and other species of sharks however the Red Fin Sharks seem to do much better in a tank dedicated to them alone.

Hope this info helps..

Hi, The Red Tailed black shark has a dark black body with a red tail. It is quite territorial and prefers its own space, it will start squabbling and possibly start fighting with other sharks in the tank. The red finned shark ( commonly known as a rainbow shark ) has a paler body, again this species is quite in-tolerant of its own kind, you only see these fish with other sharks in fish shops when they are young, as they grown they get more aggresive towards their own kind, but they both are widely regarded as a good community fish. They both grow to around 6 inches and i think the only difference (besides colour) is that if well looked after, the red tail black shark lives a little bit longer. In my opinion i prefer the red tail black shark as its colours are more intense than the rainbow shark and i kept one of these in a community tank with no problems. Only keep one single shark in a community tank though. Regards Ady

They're semi aggressive. Seems they're more likely to be territorial with other red fin sharks. May get a bit territorial if another fish comes in it's territory. Guess it just depends on what other fish you have, and the shark's personality....

I've got one of these in a community/tropical tank, and he's doing alright. Haven't seen him chasing anyone. He just loves to pick at the algae.

Keeping different fish in the same tank is not recommended.
Red Shark can be agressivea and could bite other fish so its best to remove it out to another tank.

Fish concern

no theyre not at all. i have 4 red fin sharks, 4 bala sharks, 4 iridescent sharks, 4 tiger barbs, 4 gouramis, 4 mollies and 4 korydoras all together and no one picks on anyone. if you school fish all in equal numbers theres less chance of aggresion. my red tails arent aggressive with my fish but sometimes it depends on the fish you know. they may like tigers and mollies but hate platys and swordtails. but in my experience theyre good little fishies

It depends on who you put them in with. Their personality changes depending on their tankmates. They're quite sociopathic fish. They'll get into trouble if they think they can get away with it.

Guppies - They will be a terrorist deploying phosphoris grenades to the civillian population.

Other Red tailed sharks - They will antagonize each other constantly if there's more than one.

More aggressive species - They will be peaceful & not mess with anybody.

I keep a red tailed shark in a tank with convict cichlids & botia helodes. He's the most peaceful guy in the tank & stays out of trouble. I think it would be too risky to put him in with my smaller community tanks though.

They can be intimidating for other fish. But even when they are full grown they are really no harm to anything unrelated to food.
