South Africa's crime levels are skyhigh, and although serious crimes such as murder appears to go down (according to official statisticsof the Interantional Institute for Security), murder remains a problem just like rape, hijacking, violent robbery and other forms of violence. How can South Africa do something constructive about this, in order to protect their people?

Only serious answers please.

I said "South Africa", not Africa. For those who not aware of this: South Africa is a country, Africa is a continent. And I, just to emphasize, was speaking about the country. And I also wantto have some serious answers instead of dumb, ignorant and simplistic replies.

In Hout Bay, crime has dropped by 70% in the last year. This is due to private citizens taking action by setting up a neighbourhood watch system. Every neighbourhood has set up patrols and are in radio contact with SAPS and Private security companies. I believe with the current inaction of the government, this is the only way citizens can live in relative safety, effectively they are policing themselves.

It is common knowledge that S.A. is a mess. One of the biggest reasons for this is that the people in charge don't know what they are doing or simply don't care. How else can you explain such a blatant lack of action against such violent crime. In an ideal world these people could be removed from their positions and replaced with qualified people who know what they doing. Mbeki and Selebi just deny that there is a problem, much like aids. Eradicating crime from the police force would also be a good start. A recent survey apparently quoted as many as 50% of SA's population can't tell the difference between right and wrong. This is not surprising if you look at the role models they have and how issues such as corruption are dealt with.

The only way to deal with crime is to deal with criminals. Part of SA's problem is that over the past 10 years or so an entire raft of inappropriate legislation has been passed. Some of these laws would be ok in a civillised country but that does not apply to SA.

The abolition of the death penalty was a major mistake but one that can probably not be reversed - for political reasons.

My opinion is that the country is a lost cause - like the rest of the continent.
