Formula fed Baby Boy, 18 pounds, could not breast feed, I have tried feeding him cereal with a spoon (ok'd by my pediatrician) but wakes up sooner than when I mix it with formula in a bottle (with a nipple that has been adjusted of course) I don't know how to satisfy him to sleep through the night, I don't want to give him baby food before he is 6 months. Can anyone help?

Boy it's hard to remember that far back, but I would say it's time to take the cereal out of the bottle(which we never did) and into the bowl. Fill the little piggy up. Of course use wisdom in this. You know how much he can hold. You don't want the other problem and have him waking up with a belly ache either. The bowl cereal will probably be thicker and stick to his ribs more. And make sure to increase the fluids so he doesn't get constipated from the sudden influx of cereal. Good luck.

It may be time to go baby food on this one! He is probably in a growth spurt. If he is getting most of his nutrition at night rather than day time he will keep waking for food. Try to cut back on late night feedings, instead start the bottles an hour before bed time. You must retrain him to eat during the day, and sleep at night. By 3 months his nighttime feedings should be limited. You may want to cut a bigger hole in the nipple of the bottle and hit him with Mutigrain as well as rice. 2 or 3 scoops. Use a fork to widen the hole. Breast milk will not do it alone, and Our Doctor had us put cereal in at 4 months {we already were!} Snowangle is flat out wrong! Good luck

if you have ruled out any other reason for the wakings (wet nappy, discomfort, too hot or too cold, etc), then maybe you can increase the amount of cereal given before bed, preferably from a bowl, or make an extra bottle of milk to give baby during the night? Hope this helps!Hang in there!!

Hello Stacy, I see there are lots of people giving advice and not all of it helpful to your dilemma.
It may be that there is insufficient fluid content in the cereal you are feeding to your infant. 4 month old babes are given mainly a fluid diet and those fluids keep the infant hydrated and provide much needed nutrition. Try adding more milk and water content to his bottle feeds to provide a greater liquid volume. Not only will this provide greater "stretch" response to the gut and induce contentment it will keep him from dehydration.
When an infgant gets insufficient fluids they wake early and appear to be searching for food, it is more the searching for fluid than a food. so test the theory out and see if it helps your bub to get a better rest period.
To all those other mothers: Help and advise was what was asked for not admonishment!

Your baby could be going through a growth spurt. In that case you may have to deal with the night time feedings until things even out. Try to keep him up more often during the day, this may help. And for you mom, try to get rest when he does. That should help a little. I know what you are going through, I've been there myself....twice :)

OK since baby boy is getting cereal, you have to keep him up longer during the day. Get him on your schedule, since he wants to act like a big boy you have to treat him like a big boy, don't over feed him just tire him out, OK!

The bottom line is that if he is waking up to eat, he's hungry. Some babies sleep through early, others take their time. My son never slept through the night until he was 18 months. I wasn't happy about it but it wasn't his fault that his metabolism works that way.
I empathize with your need to sleep but there really is no quick fix for this.

Cereal has LESS calories than fake or real milk. It is also highly refined and has chemical vitamins added to it, it is not wholesome good food that is healthful in anyway. It does not keep a baby any fuller than milk and may upset the baby's stomach as he is FAR TOO YOUNG to be having solids forced on him.
Have you considered a growth spurt?

You should not be feeding anything to a child under 6 months old other than breast milk.
