I don't think Unions are quite the answer. I mean why do they continue to make stuff no one wants to buy unless you bribe them with cash back, 0% financing etc. This has been going on since I was a kid 30 years ago and yet they continue to buiild crap . Are they stupid or blind?

The recalls are protection from the American legal system.
If we didn't have so many people trying to get rich from figuring
out a way to sue, then cars, medical care, insurance rates, etc
would be a heck of a lot cheaper. Why watch the ads on TV...
the lawyers are practically telling you to go out and wrench
your back, "we'll get some money for you" !

Their overhead is too high because of the excessive pay-scale and benefits paid to their unmotivated union workers. They also have become very inefficient over the years in their management/development systems. They have lived off of customer loyalty for a generation too long. Unless they change dramatically (unlikely) or are acquired by a more efficient company, they will not survive to sell cars to the next generation.

I am wondering the same thing. My daughter bought a Chevy Cavalier 5 years ago. In Dec. of that year she went out to go to work and found snow inside the car. She has taken it back to have it fixed more than once. It till snows in the inside. Snow on the out side I can understand, but on the inside!!! She had several other problems with it also. I just remembered that one because it so weird.
