Because radio stations rely heavily on advertising dollars and in order to garner the most wages they need to attract as many listeners as possible. Most of them conduct surveys to find out which songs are pleasing to the most listeners and they stick with whatever wins the most people.
Most people only listen to the radio for couple of hours a day so they keep playing the same most popular songs over and over.
It sucks but that's the way it works.

Radio station DJ's have a play list they go by. The more popular songs and artists are listed near the top. They are allowed to play the songs only once during a set time. Most of todays stations are based on modern music. The artisits that are not popluar do not get the station followers. That is why they will play the songs that people buy and make the singers popular.

Tell me about it! I've heard Hurt by Christina Anguilera so many times I'd puke if they play it again. It's all they ever play- the top 25 songs in each country, which is about the same anyway. Why do you think unpopular artists and newcomers never really get enough airplay to actually become more well-known?
The promoters pay a lot to have it aired and get them promoted so people want to buy the cd, but I think they got the wrong idea- once we're sick of it, why actually buy it?

Let me tell you why. Nowadays music sucks! Especially Hip Hop. What radio tries to do is get you to fall for the crappy songs that have those little catchy choruses or phrases. Example: "To The Left To The Left" I hate that damn song by Beyonce, but now I get it stuck in my head cause they play the damn thing so much. Next thing you know... you end up liking the fricken song! Songs are getting more stupid, more simple and I just can't stand it! :) But then again.. if radio doesn't play songs that are catchy, then they won't make any money off and they would go bankrupt. No audience = No Advertisers

because radio station's finance comes from the advertisers.. now if the advertisers hear that this radio station is not playing the popular songs so they would think that only few people are tuning in... which then would they think that why do I have to spend for an advertisement over this station if not much are listening/tuning to it.

when you have a product, you believe in your product, and when you believe.... you want all people to know... so that many peolple will buy...

that's why they advertise...

The hook is to get people to respond to music. That's why they have contest for concerts; and to keep people listening. A lot to the local D.J.'s job is to build a fan base on the local level. And do remotes to keep the people going to bar and clubs. It works and of course Radio and T.V. need = mega-$$$$ All in a days job.
