It makes a long lasting lumber. I have even seen septic tanks that were over 15 years old made out of redwood and still holding together. Very strong, durable.and rot resistant.

It basically a pest free habitat so a longer lasting wood- the last home I wlived in was made of redwood and was told by termite inspectors that this was one of the greatest benefits of the wood- no pests. The home was built in the 20's and apparently today very few homes are built of redwood - this is in California where the redwoods grow.
In addition, the trees are the oldest living trees in the world.... maybe even the tallest.

Redwood is a very durable wood. It can last for years outdoors without rotting. It resists termites. Hence it is often used for fencing. It has a very straight grain so it can be easily split into thin sheets good for shingles. Good quality redwood is also very attractive. Although its straight grain is not as interesting as those of other woods it has a rich color and takes a nice finish. It is however quite soft and dents easily.

redwood is like the perfect combination between pine and cedar. It repels water, pest, and basically all things that weaken wood, and has a less definite smell to it then cedar. It is expensive due to it size and the lack of availibility due to conservation.

Redwood naturally repels water. Unlike pine, it doesn't need to be treated, and is a popular, though expensive, choice for outdoor decks.

It is pest-free, does not rot easily (it takes longer) and it repels water. Also, it smells real good.
