The current most popular keyboard configuration is the QWERTY layout. It came into popularity in the 1800's I believe. There are others and certainly better ones out there. One of the most popular and reportedly easy to use is the Dvorak layout. The home row has all the vowels and the most used letters on it. The other rows contain less used letters. This makes typing faster and easier. The QWERTY layout is still around because of tradition. Everybody uses it and it is pretty much standard. I remember seeing on a TV special that the QWERTY was really useful on the old manual typewriters. Since they required lots of hand force QWERTY worked the best.

It goes back to the days of the typewriter. They put the letters we use less frequently on the outside parts of the keyboard because your pinkies aren't as strong as the other fingers. Today, there are many that use a different keyboard called DVORAK, instead of the QWERTY one that you're using. This new key set it supposed to ignore the typewriter pressure and instead focus on the most efficient way to type.

Actually, the qwerty keyboard layout was designed to slow down typing speeds back in the typewriter days, when fast typists would break the keyboards. It stays just because so many people are proficient touch typists in this layout. There are others that are more ergonomic, but have not been widely adopted.

they are based on the usage of the letters and the frequency they appear in words, setup in an order so that it's easier to type.imagine if the keys were in alphabetical order...it would be way harder to type
