WHAT IS IRONIC, OR UPSIDE DOWN, ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF OCEANIC SOCIETY?

The ironic part about Oceanic society is that every one of the ministries is named after the exact opposite of their intended effect. The ministry of information, for example, works to destroy books and reduce the size of the English language. The ministry of peace is the ministry that declares war.

I read the book a while ago, but what i do remember is: it's ironic how those people that work in the ministries are constantly spied on and have their freedoms limited. But the people that don't work for the gov't (i forget what they were called) are free to do what they want, when they want. they can eat, drink, have sex, etc. What is ironic is that we generally consider those that are of higher socio-economic background (like Winston) to have greater control over there lives and freedoms. However, this is completely upside down in oceania
