Not in the sixties, but the nineties.
We mostly stopped at Flying J for hot chocolates!
I wish Motel 6 was just $6 then!
Not many Motel 6 sites had pools, though the one in Chicago had an indoor heated one - very nice.
What I most remember was crossing South Dakota and wondering; when are we ever going to get to Wall Drug?

My experience was traveling in the early 70's with two female friends (Nancy and Deanna, my best friends) from Calif. through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. We spent 9 months on the road, after we all quit our jobs, sold everything we had and invested it all in a 1961 Metro (The Green Weenie), which was converted into a camper. Yes, we would swim at different hotels/motels but we wouldn't stay there. But we even streaked at least one of them. Those were good times. We worked many odd jobs and had a great time. Good question. Thanks for the memories.

My parents and I drove with my cousin and her husband from Chicago area to Miami beach in 63. We stayed in some No Tell Motels along the way. I don't know about the foot long hot dogs, but I remember the trip being very hot and long. This was of course, before car A/C and with 4 adults and me in the car, let me tell you it wasn't the best of times. HAHA It was in the dead of summer as well.

Yea, I do. I actually liked malts better than shakes. I also remember Pup n Taco and they had slushies that were really good. Ahh the good old days. We stayed in Motel Six when they were just six dollars.
