From everything I have read so far VISTA is a wash because of all the hardware upgrades you need to get. Wait unitl you plan on buying a new computer and make sure it has vista installed.

Windows2000 Pro
XP is better than Vista, because it more stable now with all the fixes.
Vista in time may prove to be better once it gets smoothed out. This can only happen when people start using it and having trouble and Microsoft make fixes and put them in a SP1 and SP2 or whatever they call it this time.
Vista does have a problem for a time with software running on it, many companies may not have a upgrade at this time for your software, so, check the web-sites for that stuff.
One little goodie I thought is nice about Vista is the ability to use a flash drive for virtual memory, that will help people with a motherboard that not have a lot of upgrade capabilities. The flash drive would access faster than a hard drive.
Vista really need a minimum of 1 GB of RAM, even though they say 512 MB, it work, but, not very well.
I would not be in a hurry to grab Vista, give it some time to see how it fair on the new computers that people buy.
Also, for a regular user, I feel Home Premium should be the best for the money, unless it for a big company then the others may be OK.

It really depends, Windows XP is the most used version that most people enjoy, and simple to use. Vista, well there are 3 versions, Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate. Vista are already came out, so I suggest to keep XP Pro for now, and wait to get a free upgrade to Ultimate, or Premium.
