I've watched quite a few live performances from various bands and noticed that in front of the guitarist and bassists, there are usually 2 rectangle bocks with a slope on the end. What are they for? Just standing on or what?

they're called "moniters" they are used by the musicians to hear what's going on with the rest of the band so that they know what to do and when to do it. hearing where everyone else is in the song is highly important, and moniters accomplish this neccessity. many musicians now are switching to "in-ear moniters" which is a wireless transmitter attached to what basically amounts to a single sided headphone.

They are pa speakers. A pa is a very powerful system that mics the amps and projects the sound and controls the sound levels.

They are monitor speakers so the band and the vocalists can hear what they sound like, and adjust accordingly.
