I hate to say it but the core 2 duo is better

Among your 2 choices Athlon 64x2 @2.6 GHZ and Core 2 duo @ 2.13 GHZ

1. Athlon X2 5000+ costs $285 and Core 2 Duo E6400 costs $ 224

performance of both these are similar .. with a slight edge for the Athlon ...

but if you consider Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4 Ghz.. a more comparable processor in terms of cost and Mhz.. then Core 2 wins hands down.. and its got a 4 MB Cache...

Currently AMD FX-62(Winsor) was the fastest desktop CPU, but it still not adequately competitive against Intel fastest Core 2 Duo(EX6800) and it is only got equal performance to Intel E6600.
Consider to the performance, althougth most of AMD core duo got little cheaper than Intel new core 2 duo, there is no signification advantage to go for AMD right now.
Even some of the older Pentium D can easily beat down AMD Athlon 64 x 2 processor.

The Core2Duo has an average of 3 -7 % better performance in most apps (not all).

Go here for detailed tests between any 2 models of CPU :

I would go for AMD because of the better price as well as upgrade option to quad core on the same CPU socket (AM2/940).

Intel does not offer that luxury & the difference in performance is no big deal ... it's like saying a 180mph Porche is no good because a Ferarri does 200mph .... who cares ?

*** I was just corrected on this & apologize for the inaccurate info ...Intel does allow quad core upgrades on the same socket as the Core2Duo ****

Thanks to " mysticman44 " for the correction.

out of all your choices the athlon is the better, but the best is the intel xion processor and if you can get it double stacked and triple threaded you can process up to 3 gigabytes a second
