I'm going with the Americans here and say The Ramones!
Sex Pistols only did the one album and were not talented at all. They just had a great gimmick that got them a lot of attention so they became legendary for it.
The Clash were an EXCELLENT band but I'm from the USA and The Clash wrote songs about the politics of the uk and other parts of the world that I couldn't relate to. Except for when they're songs helped me to relate.
That leaves The Ramones. Americas little band that could! I don't think they ever recorded a bad song. They never swayed from their style and the language of their music was simple and could speak to all of us! It saddens me The Clash will never be again, but it breaks my heart that there will never be another Ramones album or concert. Long Live Johnny & Joey!!! ;-)

The Clash.
The Sex Pistols had a couple of good songs, but they were a lot better as provocateurs than as musicians.
The Ramones have never done anything for me at all. To me they are little more than a pop band with good hooks but little else of note.
The Clash, however, stand high above both those bands. It was an exaggeration to call them "the only band that matters", but The Clash wrote about things that were meaningful, they could play a wide variety of styles well and, most importantly, everything was built on the foundation of excellent songs.

None of those bands started punk. That honor would to go to Velvet Underground, and then Iggy and the Stooges. The Ramones, however, made American punk what is today, with the Clash doing it in London. The Sex Pistols just exxagerated what punk originally was. They were all good in their own rights, until Sid Vicious joined the Pistols. Johnny Rotten is the real master behind them though. Of course, The Cramps could annihilate them all. They are catchy, sleazy, kinky and spooky. If surf came out of the Louisiana swaps then the Cramps would have invented it.

The Ramones! The Clash is also an awesome band and a very big part of music history. However, the Ramones have reached a wider audience. Even my mother knows "I wanna be sedated." ....I can't stand Johnny Rotten, so I can't give any props to the Sex Pistols.

better?? Kinda hard to say..the Sex Pistols were great because they sucked. The Romones were great because they were a new stlye and sound and the Clash was great because they were political and rocked the house.
They all had different musical styles...one was English punk, one was NY punk and the other was punk, influanced by reggae.
Hmm...Id probally have to say....the Clash. Maybe because Im from the 80's and I have a few of their records from that time.

Ramones they outlasted both the Sex Pistols and The Clash. They also invented punk. The Ramones formed in 1974 one year before the Sex Pistols they are credited with inventing punk rock. The Sex Pistols had one good album that is it. Myself i would say the Crass is the greatest punk band ever though.

The ramones did not invent punk it was the sex pistols. But the Ramones are also a very good punk band but for me its the sex pistols" anarchy in the uk" that says it all.
