is it weird that i'm still so disappointed about not having a sweet 16 party? i know theres a million more important things in the world and i didnt want anything big like on tv, but theres still a part of me that wishes that i'd had one. is this because i've just been watching too much television or just how society is?

I was a little disappointed for a long time myself but, we just have to move on from it. Do something special for yourself. This sweet sixteen show on MTV is just a lot of hype. These kids have more money than they know what to do with and they act like spoiled brats. I would rather not have had one at all than to be a selfish, stuck up, rich snob who whines and cries because Mommy & Daddy didn't buy her the right brand of car.

When I turned 16 I thought that there was supposed to be some magical moment where I would feel like a princess and blah blah blah.. it's all a sham. That stupid show feeds into this. I really feel sorry for teenagers because it is getting more and more difficult to live up to these kinds of standards. Not only are you supposed to be thin and pretty and wear just the right clothes and hair and makeup and etc... you are supposed to have a 16th birthday party that cost thousands of dollars to put together? These girls that get these parties are wealthy.. their parents spend as much money on this party as most people do for big weddings! If you really watch the show, these girls are also very shallow and most of the people at the party are people she hardly even knows! They always wear this really revealing dress that she demands her parents let her wear, she always gets a car, and always throws at least one tantrum. It also makes me sick to hear 15 year olds talk about how much money they spent on their boyfriend for Christmas (and I am talking hundreds...) and often its more than I spent on everyone I know combined! All of this has nothing to do with jealousy.. it has to do with my concern for the younger generation!

Yes, in my opinion it is because of television. There are millions of 16 year olds all over the world that are suffering in poverty. They do not even own a computer to complain about not having a sweet 16 party. When I see those spoiled little brats on MTV having those ridiculous parties, it makes me sick to my stomach. Be glad that your parents are not raising a self absorbed child. For your birthday do something special for a 16 year old from a poor country or family and that will make you feel much better than any party could.

No, it's because you are a kid still, and kids still expect big celebrations about them. And that's not a bad thing.

You're not supposed to have to think about the big, hard heavy things yet in our society.

So how about you getting a part time job for the next couple years, set aside an account, make some plans and have yourself one hell of an 18th birthday party?
