I have a small welder that will run steel and aluminum. If at all possible I would like to get just 1 type of gas for both so I can easily switch back and forth. Problem is the ideal gas for steel is C25, and aluminum has to be welded with a totally inert shielding gas. So I was wondering if pure argon would work for steel, or am I going to have to just wait until I have more money and just not weld aluminum right now.

Aluminum runs best on pure argon. Steel can be welded with many diferent shielding gases. C25 is good but Co2 is cheeper but has a little more spatter. There isn't really a good gas for both, it might work to use pure argon for both but the steel would not have a verry good apearance or strength. You could use argon for aluminum and self shield flux core for steel. Ask a welding supply shop, they may be able to give you some ideas.

Hi, I drive a wire feeder on mig all day, You have the facts right. Aluminum really is best welded on a tig instead, but if you really want to do it on a mig, make sure you do have the right gas. I wouldn't try to cross between the two unless I knew exactly which gas would do that, and how much flow to set the regulator at.

I'm not too sure about aluminum, but a 50/50 mix of argon/oxygen works best for steel.
The set-up my brother has , has a quick connect on the gas line to the tanks for quick change-overs.
