Baking soda is a white powder. In an acid it bubbles.
NaHCO3, 1 sodium, 1 hydrogen, 1 carbon, 3 oxygen=6 atoms
it is a compound because it is chemically combined in a definite ratio
Baking soda is basic because when CO2 is released it leaves NaOH, which is a strong base. It is made from a weak acid and a strong base.
NaHCO3+ CH3COOH--> CO2+H2O+ NaCH3COO
It is pH above 7, around 9
