One of two things is going to happen...we win...or we lose. If we decide to pull out and go without securing Iraqi freedom then there will be a real civil war in Iraq. Not the pretend civil war that the American press is now promoting but a real civil war that will be not unlike the purges of the 1930s. Many of our regional partners will be challenged. So...what is the plan? Many are calling for a withdrawal....to those and others....let's hear what our Statement of US strategic interests should be for the next administration..will we even have one? For those that don't know..this is how nations tell each other what is important and could cause conflict.

History will decide who is blamed....the point of the question is...since it was a breach of our stated national interests that got us into the war...what should our national interests be?

I know this is a serious issue and a serious question but I am sorry, I had a very silly reaction.
PLAN? WAS THERE EVER A PLAN?
It seems to me that the main plan has always been to make the most money possible before the inevitable ending, whatever that might be, for various specialized interest groups, the ones who profit, the munitions people, those "rebuilding" this war torn country.

At this point it seems that Iraq is set to blow no matter what anyone does. Wherever we Westerners meddle in the mid east, we leave a swathe of destruction behind. Who really knows what lies ahead for this torn nation?
There are no rules in the Middle East. Anything can happen.
All I know is that we need to support the poor lads sent over there to do the dirty work for these greedy corporate types. Those boys are victims just as much as the innocent people caught up in that war zone.

Well, I have to disagree with you. The violence will escalate if we leave, no matter when we leave. BUT, it is already escalating. Bush is escalating the war even more since he is sending in more troops.
There already is a civil war
You don't consider 250 Iraqies killed a day with sectarian suicide bombers NOT a civil war? The Sunni's and Shiite hate eachother for very historical reasons. This is exactly how Saddam came to power in the first place. The man was a monster, but he knew his country. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld never looked into the history or the culture of Iraq before they invaded, that is one of the reasons why he has already failed in Iraq. If you are going to occupy a country, make it easier on yourself and know the country you are occupying. don't you do research before you take on a new project, job or travel plan so you know exactly what to expect and problems you might confront? Why would planning a war be any different if not more demanding of that research?

I am still trying to understand the "plan", of going there in the first place! I have a son, a brother, and an ex-husband over there, along with several close friends. They volunteered to go, but they now see what a cluster-f****, it was, because they were misled. From reports that I am getting here at home the people in Iraq resent our being there. Not all, but most. This was not a well planned mission to say the least, but now it's done, and a resolution will be a long time coming, I am afraid. I just hope and pray for some intelligent leadership in the future----we owe it to our soldiers.

I'm tired of people putting this on the democrats to fix this mess. Bush doesn't deserve that pass. People like you always talk about what will happen if we leave. Well tell me this, what is the president going to do if his surge plan doesn't work? How is he prepared for defeat? You never hear him saying anything about what we do if we don't succeed. He has no backup plan himself.
Furthermore, not a real civil war yet? What is your definition of a civil war? I consider Iraqi insurgents killing each other a civil war, and that's exactly why we're losing in Iraq. Our soldiers our in there playing monkey in the middle with their lives refereeing a civil war.
There is no answer for this disaster. This fight was lost the day our president declared war. The sooner you people realize there is no military answer, the sooner we can end this madness.

I was for removing Saddam. I am for relentlessly pursuing and eliminating terrorism.
I am not for sitting around in Iraq though.
As Sun Tzu said a protracted war is not one that you are going to win. ( paraphrasing ) And I agree.
Action will bring about results. Close the borders to Iraq and let the Iraq military and police sweep the cities and remove the holed up insurgents.
I think thats the best plan. Then get out of there and let the Iraqi's rebuild.

I do believe we should leave, but we cannot leave the country in shambles. We should hire independent contractors to rebuild the infrastructure, and not allow Halliburton to have anything to do with it. Everybody at the top levels in that company should be tried for war crimes. We should also provide funding to the Iraqi Government for them to rebuild on their own accord, and we should sign a treaty with the U.N. stating to the world that we will never allow our military industrial complex to wage war unilaterally again. This administration has burned bridges that have taken a lot of time, hard work, and human lives to build. Hopefully we are able to regain the trust of the world community.

Well I for one am still wondering what the plan was getting us into Iraq. Maybe if the someone who was making the decisions had thought more then, we would not all be worrying so much now. But whenever it happens, we will withdraw sooner or later. Let us all hope, for all of us, that the next "Decider" will decide a little better.

there is no way to win. iraq will never have or accept a democratic form of government. our choice is stay and be police for the long term future or leave. staying will, over time, destroy our military, and cost us in excess of a trillion dollars. eventually, iraq will get a tyrant type dictator or either a religious cleric type of leader. whichever they get, the leader will have to kill a lot of people to restore order.
our statement for future interests should be containment. it worked pretty well in the past.

The Liberals haven't thought that far yet. It is far more fun to hate on Bush than it is to solve a difficult problem.

I hate to say it Mike, but there is no way out of that country for us. I believe we have created such a mess there, it is our duty to remain there until we've restored some normalcy to the lives of the people who live there. I doubt we will see that in our lifetime. Thanks alot George Bush and company.
