I have a 5G 30GB Video Ipod. What are the benefits? How long does it take to install? Chances of ruining my Ipod? Is it worth it?

If you are getting all the functionality you want out of your Ipod, i wouldn't try it. Unless you want to risk wasting all that money. It definitely voids the warranty.

A friend of a friend tried it, and it worked, but there is a risk involved. And I'm a Linux fan, by the way. I just wouldn't trust it on something like an Ipod until this project has proven itself and this becomes a common thing for people to do with their Ipods. Good night!

Oh yeah . . . I just read on their wiki that it's safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation Ipods. It therefore stands to reason that the others are either not supported at all or not completely safe to install on. It only mentions the 4th generation Ipod project being under development, probably because of the shortage of used 5G Ipods to experiment on. Look at this:
"Is my iPod supported?

Currently the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation iPods are supported in release version. The iPod mini, 4th generation iPods (including U2 version), Photo iPods, and the Nano are in development. Details on which devices are supported can be seen on the project status page. "

Indeed, the project status for 5G Ipods looks pretty grim as of late. There isn't even a USB driver yet (as of January 2007). Look here: http://www.ipodlinux.org/Project_Status

Good night!

"Development is currently on-going..." on the port to video ipod.

If you must try it anyway, the source page tells you how to restore the original firmware too.
