I'm a collage student at Wayne State in Detroit, and I'm looking to get into a D&D game. I've tried Wizard's "classifieds", facebook, and simply asking around. I would post an add at the local games shoppe but I'm not within walking distance, and I don't have a car.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I have the books; my question is related to finding people to play with.

Looks like you've done or thought of almost everything I would have suggested, though you could try Meetup as well. A nice online service that lists various sorts of clubs, D&D is one of their popular categories.

You could also try playing online. No, not DDO (unless you really want to), play by post. There are a number of play by post sites, the one I use is Myth Weavers

Highly recommended.

Try searching the web, you can find plenty of e-books and also plenty of player created stuff. Depending on which edition you want to play the easier the search will be, 3.5 is the current edition but 2nd is still alot of fun and might be able to pull ebooks easier.
