I weighed 275# as of 1/1/07 and have lost 18# as of today simply by BRISK walking and improved diet and portion control. I have found that over the course of the month that I have been able to run up to 3 miles in 25 minutes (yes, all at one time!!). That is only my own personal experience..... I should also add that I smoke 1-2 packs of full flavor cigarettes a day, work in the construction field and used to be very active in high school in basketball and cross country running.
My advice boils down to this: Exercise and fitness are a lifestyle. They can be added in to your existing lifestyle, just not all at once, I don't think you are too heavy to run, but build some endurance prior to starting your running. I feel that by doing so, you will be more inclined to stick with it and get the results that you're looking to achieve and keep fitness as a daily activity. You are right about your joints, it is important to take care of them, be sure to warm up and stretch before AND AFTER. Stretching adds flexibility and strength. Good luck, hope this helps and keep fit!!

If I were you, I would start out walking on a dirt track. If you have access to a gym that has a tread mill, thats safe for your knees. I would still start walking for about 30 minutes to start with. Then as you lose weight, you can start jogging or fast walking. After you lose about 30lbs, You could consider running. Still a tread mill is easier on your knees.

What ever diet and exercise plan you choose, should be one that your MD approves of,especially if you have cardiovascular problems, like high blood pressure,or orthopedic problems like arthritis etc. It also would be wise to work up slowly with your running or jogging to avoid stress injuries to the knees or ankles.Brisk walking is a good way to begin, then you can progress .Good luck! I cant see why it would be bad, run on grass or dirt as apposed to concrete or roads. It is more cushioning
I weigh 250 pounds - 114kg and run 2 -3 times a week usually cross country through hilly bushland

you are right about the knees,so be careful.
your weight is only significant in relation to your body as a whole.
if you are 6' tall ,it is not a lot,but you could be unfit ,so to start jogging is not a good idea.
start off with walking instead and build up slowly anyway.
