Description: Rutherford B. Hayes won the Presidency by only one electoral vote. He took the oath of office in the White House Red Room after the disputed election of 1876 was resolved. A number of improvements were made to the White House: a tall fence was built around the South Lawn, President Grant’s Billiard Room was replaced by a larger Conservatory, the first White House telephone was installed in 1879, and the first typewriter came in 1880.

I'm doing some research on the white house for a paper I'm writing in my history class, and I want it to be as different than the other papers that are also being written on the white house as it possibly can. I'm going around trying to find random pieces of information about the white house, and this is one that I didn't even think about. I'm way excited to find out more info on it. Thanks so much for sharing this, it helped a lot!
