Also - some instruments are in more demand from bands. There are a billion guitar players out there, but bass players usually have their pick of bands because there aren't that many out there. Can something similar be said of the trumpet or trombone?

Trumpet is way easier if you're learning to read notes. Trombone slides are pretty much difficult to guage the distance and you have to be tone-perfect and know when you're flat or sharp. It's almost the same with the double bass which is also similar to the bass guitar.
Trumpet has 3 keys, doesn't need to transpose and the mouth piece is easier to 'buzz'. I think it's the simplest brass instrument to play but neither trumpet or trombone players are much in demand. Trombone players can find their spot in maybe a jazz band but only a really sophisticated orchestra or big band may take on a trumpet. Trombone is probably the most important instrument in an orchestra or brass band because it plays most of the melody if there are no string instruments and winds aren't as loud.
My acoustic fusion band has a trumpet player- but that's only because she plays the guitar too.

trumpets has only 3 keys but i find trombone easier. maybe because the mouthpiece for a trumpet is so much smaller then that of a trombone. i have a long reach for the trombone too. trombone will require lots more air and breathing as well.

Both are equally hard. With the trumpet, there are only three keys, but to hit the notes, you have to change your lips... and with the trombone you need to do that also, but need to get the correct slide position.

And if you were to ever read notes, the trumpet's notes are in trebel clef...and thats what most instruments are in.

And for your last question, it all depends on the band.

You know. there are a billion guitarists, but I bet you there are not a billion guitarists who can sight read.. I've played 40 yrs. all styles.. Guitar is fun.but If I had to do it over, I would have played more piano. My mother played trombone in college, my two uncles played trumpet in college.. I wanted to play drums.. parents didn't want any drums in the house. I settled on guitar around 1963 and have played just about everything as far as genre is concerned.. IF your looking to get good enough to gig.. and want to play a horn. I'd try alto sax..

Trombone - easier because the mouthpiece is bigger therefore u don't need to blow as fast, also normally the trombone gets the harmony therefore their parts are easier to play
