The term "i.e." in writing is an abbreviation of the latin "id est." Basically, it translates to "that is" as in "that is to say" or "in other words." For example, "Have you seen the most beautiful woman in the world, i.e., my wife."

People often misuse "i.e." by using it to say "for example." The correct latin term for "for example" is "e.g." short for "exemplia gratia."

Hope this helps.

It means "for example" IE. he should have known to jump out of the way from the piano shadow that was converging upon him.

The answers above me are wrong. It is the intitals "e.g." that means for example. Actually they mean "exampli gratis" which is Latin for "for example. "i.e." stands for the Latin "id est" which means "that is." "i.e." only has one answer when it is used, where "e.g." can give only an example meaning where there may be more than one answer. "George Bush is the leader of the Free World, i.e. he is the President of the United States."
"There are many instances of celebrities behaving badly, e.g Paris Hilton, Snoop Dog, Rosie O'Donnell."

It's an abbreviation for "id est", which is Latin for 'that is', or in other words. People use it in English slang to refer to examples, i.e., similar situations, objects, or an alternative explanation may follow.
