First off, let me say that I am bisexual. Ok?
Good.
I'm just tossing out a little theory I have here, and while it's not completely formed, I thought it would be interesting to see what people think. *smiles*
I don't really think homophobia is real. People can hate homosexuals, like them, try and convert them, whatever. But being scared? Think about it. It doesn't really sound right.
We have phobias for many, many, things. Almost everything. Spiders, big or small spaces, the dark, snakes, etc. All these things are natural to be afraid of though. They could be a dangerous thing to us. Our long ago ancestors would have been afraid, since these things could be a danger to their survival. And these dangers have been around for as long as humans.
Now, homosexuality isn't exactly dangerous, is it. Unless you believe you're going to hell, but that's not what i'm saying. I'm saying gay people aren't a threat to anyone, generally no more then anyone else.

Nor, I am I not afraid to say that homosexuality is physically not normal. No, that's not an insult. Look at our bodies. They are made for woman/man relationships. Doesn't mean people don't have same-sex relationships and succed. But since it's not a physically natural thing, and our physical senses aren't threatened by it, well, sorry to say, I do not believe in homophobia. I believe it's an excuse. Because you can't help a phobia, it's a perfect excuse to use, to say, "I'm sorry, but I can't HELP but be scared of you. I really can't. "
Anyways, that's my theory. Have fun with it.

It works BOTH ways - there are gay men who despise 'straight' people!! So.......... what are they scared of?? Are they scared that all the straight women are going to 'steal their boyfriends', are they scared that we are going to seduce all the gay men, and once they have tasted the passion of a woman they will convert to being straight!?!?!?!

Thats utter nonsense!!!!

Why is it only recognised that gays suffer at the hands of this prejudice?? I have recently been on the recieving end of a very 'heterophobic' gay man, who was so 'closed minded' and petty it was unbelievable - I was accussed of all sorts of things, despite that fact that he had committed EVERY single thing he accussed me of himself and I was subjected to alot of abuse from him!!!!

I totally understand your question as I held NO fear of him what-so-ever, but, it seems that HE held a great deal of fear of me!!!

I think alot of the problem is people don't like to think about what gays get upto in the bedroom and its not made any easier by the fact that alot of gay men go out of their way to shove it in your face - obviously NOT ALL gays are like this, but thus far, ALL the ones I have come across are - certainly my friends (gay) are!!!!
I'm not talking about kissing in the park or cuddling in public - I dont think hardly anyone cares about that these days - its normal but when you have to go into details about EXACTLY what you get up to in bed, where and when - which, I have found, gays do ALOT more explicitly then straight people, it can be very off putting!!

So yes, I agree with your theory 100%, however, I am inclined to feel (after suffering from the incident I spoke of above) that gays actually fear straight people!!!

I always thought homophobia was the term used for people who are afraid homosexuals will try and get them into a gay relationship, or "turn them" gay, or something like that. In other words, they're not actually afraid of the people themselves, like someone with a phobia of spiders would be afraid of spiders; they're afraid of the thought of that homosexual trying to pull them into the gay lifestyle. You're right, 'phobia' probably isn't the right word for it. But it's ridiculous either way, though.

Definition of phobia:
1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.
2. A strong fear, dislike, or aversion.

Since some people exhibit these behaviors in regards to gay people, homophobia is very real.

The smaller-minded you are the more things that you don't accept or understand threaten the things you hold sacred and make you feel worthwhile. So being homosexual is not just a lifestyle choice it becomes an attack on a person's self image. Just try telling a redneck that NASCAR isn't a sport or that WWF is rigged and see what happens.

I disagree with your assertion that the word homophobia misrepresents that fear is the issue. The only thing racism and homophobia are is fear and ignorance. People fear the unknown and when you have the president of the united states saying "gay people are undermining the sacred institution of marriage" people fear gay people b/c they think there won't be anyone for their children to marry in ten years, or the kids will be gay, or being married won't mean anything anymore, or whatever nonesense which equals fear. And when they see public displays of affection, or a gay guy at wrk, or whatever scenario the hatred they display is fear. So yes - there is fear for these people and it is rooted in ignorance. They need to finally get to know someone gay or become educated in the issue. I guess a good way to start is to agree with you on one thing - gay people aren't a threat to anyone, generaaly no more than anyone else.

Uh ok, the others answered the phobia part. But what's this? It's now an excuse cause it's not normal physically? Ok now you are WAAAAAAAAAAY off. When i guy gets beaten to death cause he's gay, that's homophobia. And a bisexual person creates this theory.

Please just atleast understand what you're talking about BEFORE you create a theory. OK?

I always think it's funny, the idea that anyone who hates gay people secretly IS gay (and I'm not a gay-basher, just before anyone accuses! I'm merely illustrating a point). That's such bizarre logic. If I hate the Smurfs, does that mean I really want to be a Smurf deep down inside, but I'm scared to admit it to myself?
If I hate chocolate ice cream with a passion, does it mean that I secretly, deep down, love chocolate ice cream but I simply can't admit that to myself? NO! IT MEANS I HATE CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM! Nothing more.

No, homophobia isn't a real fear. Why should we be afraid of Homosexuals. We can pity them, and loathe them and their nasty perverted lifesytles, but not fear them. Homophobia is a term, or a slur used by liberals and the mainstream media to villianize anyone who doesn't agree with them on gay rights, or gay rights issues. It is like calling Condoleezza Rice the N word because you don't like her politics.

Homophobic men hate gay men because they are subconciously scared that if we successfully seduce them that they'll enjoy the experience - that would confuse the hell out of them - which would scare them into re-defining how they see themselves.

Homophobic women who hate gay men are afraid that we will 'steal' their boyfriends.

It's that simple.
