You're writing a paper due for a class...is this supposed to be your OWN opinion on Shakespeare? Anyway...to me he was amazing because of the sound and flow of his words...just LISTEN to the rhythm....it's like music.I don't enjoy reading Shakespeare's works but I could listen to Shakespearean actors READ them anyday.

Why? Simply because he describes human nature with all its flaws. World has changed but not human beings. We have not learned from our history and are still doing the same errors again and again. Othello the jealous guy is your neighbour, your husband. Evolution of man is an illusion, our animal and destructive nature overcome the intellect. In centuries Shakespeare will still be modern as his plays are timeless.
I would like to add that the BEST interpret of Shakespeare's characters I've ever seen is ANTHONY HOPKINS. He is the only comedian I know who does not exagerate when acting and who thus shows how Shakespeare is modern and Soooo Far from being dull. You all must see the Shakespeare dvd collection of the BBC with Hopkins. That was an advice for all those teachers killing Shakespeare in our youth's heart everyday.

I agree with other posters, but also his contribution to the Modern English lexicon can not be overstated. Shakespeare invented in excess of two-hundred words still used today (scholars continue to argue over just how many, but it was impressive regardless). I teach English at UNLV and would advise you not to use Wikipedia as a secondary source; it may be a good resource for getting some ideas, but it is not considered a reliable secondary source for academic papers. The reason being is that anyone can post anything on Wikipedia without any real expertise and verification is overseen by volunteers with no set qualifications or expertise--anything that is reliable on Wikipedia can be found in a truly reliable source. Enjoy your studies in Shakepeare!

The rhythm and the sheer poetry of the language make William Shakespeare the greatest author who ever lived. His stories were universal themes that showed humanity at its best and worst. Read some of the great soliloquies - Hamlet's or Macbeth's, or the passage where Richard III wrestles with what exists of his conscience.

His stories are timeless (so much that they even existed before him!). Everyone can relate -- perhaps not as Milanese princesses -- but look at the Romeo and Juliet "forbidden lovers" theme and how often it appears in works. There's a reason for this.
If you've seen 10 things I hate about you, it's essentially based on the Taming of the Shrew plot.
His writing is beautiful, as are the emotions he has captured throughout time.
