After the Euro came into effect both countries are equally expensive now.
The important thing to consider is that the health care in Spain is head and shoulders above the standard you will find in Portugal. This should be the first concern to a retiree.

The standard of living will be higher in Spain but the population density will be higher as well.

The weather is more moderate, depending on the region, in Spain.

The Spanish language and legal system will be much easier to deal with than in Portugal.

Whatever you do do not move to the Azores unless you would like a climate similar to Ireland and an infrastructure similar to Morocco.

I was in both of those countries, but Spain for much longer. I'd say go to Spain to retire, not to say Portugal isn't a good place cause it was alright when I went.

Spain, without a doubt! There is just so much more to do there. Spain has everything. Everything you could possibly want is in Spain. If you lived in Spain then everything will be at your fingertips. There is nothing better than Spain. If you lived in Spain than you could officially take the train in the rain through the plains in Spain, just think of it! WOW. Spain.

Both are great countries with much to see. But if u want to live a cheap life, Portugal is the best. If you want a calm place to live,with view to the sea,try one of the Azores ils. (portuguese islands).
We have great weather too!=)

Spain? .......Taxing your pension now, 20% over 7,800€ euro per person......... so if you drew 20,000€ between two of you then you would cough up ..... €3,688 .......if you drew between you ........30,000€ then you would cough up €5,688........cheaper to retire in Bahamas.
