The purist would tell you the E30 is the best. It started out as a race car designed for racing and then converted to a street car. However, by today's standards, it's performance is lacking and it's suspension design outdated.
My favorite is the E46. The design is simply beautiful and I like that it has very subtle body differences (wider stance/fenders) than the non-M E46.
The E36, though most affordable and still a lot of fun compared to even some of the new cars coming out, is probably the ugliest of all M3. The purists dislike it because it was designed as a street car first and then modified by the ///M division. Compared to the non-M E36 cars, it received very few M accents, most diappointing to enthusiasts was the lack of a wide body design like the E30 and E46 got. However, to E36 owners, this was a blessing as it made it very easy to swap M3 parts to a non-M E36.

As far as wicked awesomeness, the E30. That thing looks just mean! I have an E36 though and am biased to that one. I just love the long look. That coupled with a mix of the E30 box style with the E46 rounds makes it uber sexy to me. Put some nice 5 spoke wheels on there, oh baby!! :)

that's a hard call. i've got owned E36 M3 and now an E39 M5, plus i've got pushed E46 M3's lots and we've an E46 330i, so i've got sampled a super form of the vehicles you point out. On a sheer fee foundation, a sturdy project E36 M3 with under a hundred,000 miles is a super purchase for the money, despite if that's a smaller vehicle and that i got here upon it much less useful with 2 toddlers to haul around (and mine grew to become right into a 2-door coupe), despite if that's super managing, nimble, and surprisingly sturdy in case you do the traditional upkeep. The E39 M5 is an dazzling vehicle with the surely addictive S62 V-8 motor, despite if it is going to run you extra in upkeep and upkeep as a results of fact the engine in all fairness tremendously tuned. however the torque and common equipment of killer overall performance, super handing (for a 4000 lb. vehicle) and suited creature convenience. you are able to unquestionably get a first rate one for not often to any extent further than an E46 M3 as a results of fact all human beings is grew to become off with the help of the gas mileage and skill restoration fee. probable the main suitable common purchase in case you do not choose 4 doors is an E46 M3. that's a super mix of indoors area, convenience, overall performance, and managing, plus that's a surprisingly sturdy vehicle common. basically make effective the engine had any required remember upkeep for the undesirable rod bearings that lots of the early vehicles mandatory.

Definately the E30. That is the only REAL M3. The others are just regular cars.

The E-30 is by far the better looking. That's coming form someone who loves the style of 80's - early 90's Beemers.
It looks like it has a real purpose while the others look like nice cars. The E-30 looks the closest to an actual racing car too. You just can't beat the look of those flared arches and the boxy shape.
It's a way smaller car than the other two and just lends to its appeal.
