It is subjective. Cast iron requires something added to the walls to make it into a bathtub/shower. So tile, man-made marble, or other materials are added, which costs more money but often looks nice too. The acrylic is a higher quality fiberglass combination that is a single unit that typically costs less than the cast iron w/accessories. I decide based on the price range of the house that I am building. But acrylic is by far the most popular of the two products.

Most people get the Acrylic,
because it is cheaper.
I like the new cast iron, with
the built in heater. They are
so warm, start to finish. If
you are taking a bath, or just
a shower, it is so much better
to have it heated. No more
freezing cold tub. No more
ice cold water in the middle
of your bath....... But it cost.

Cast Iron will last much longer before having to be replaced, but it is more expensive to put in initially. Also easier to clean, and will not scratch as easily. Acrylic is less expensive, and needs special care when cleaning. Once scratched, it is harder to keep looking good and clean. There are Pros and cons to each.

I've had both and I enjoy the cast iron more. It's an old claw foot tub in need of some minor repair but the elegance of it is the center point of my bathroom.
So cast iron.

They both have pros and cons. Iron is cold to touch and sucks heat out of bathwater when filling, and is extremely heavy to carry when putting in, often has to be broken out and removed in pieces if replaced. But, is more durable than acrylic in many cases.

Acrylic can crack if thin and unsupported, and it scratches. But it can come in heavy weight, and great shapes colors and sizes. It is not as cold to the touch as iron.
