Technically it's when a document called a "Final Dissolution of Marriage" is filed at the end of your divorce process.

But if you're not in the divorce stages yet it sounds like you might want to see a good therapist or counselor. Don't give up until you give it a good honest try.

Technically, nobody will ever know when your marriage is over but you and your spouse. However, when one person files for divorce and the paperwork is done and the lawyers are hired and the property is divided then the marriage is over. That's the literal sense of the word "over". But when you and your spouse stop trying to make things work then it's probably headed in that direction. Ending a marriage is not pretty, it costs a fortune in legal fees, and the pain lasts for years; in some cases it never ends. The thing to remember is that marriage cannot be based on looks, intimacy, weight, etc. These are all things that naturally change over time. There has to be a connection that goes well beyond these things because if you do not have something more real between you and your spouse then it probably won't last. For example, if you thought that your spouse would always have the thin waist, clear skin, etc. then you will be very disappointed because life happens my friend. It has to be real.

The whole thing, or just the thrill? BB King wrote a song about the thrill being gone. But, if the thrill is gone, it doesn't necessarily mean the marriage is "over". It might just be settling into a comfortable routine. Most do.

If physical abuse or adultery is involved, it's over in my book. But, anything short of that, I'd recommend that you do all you can to work things out - especially if kids are involved.

When there is no trust, respect, and love. Or if one of the spouses gives up on the marriage. It takes two people and if one gives up then there is little the other person can do.

Here are the warning signs of running on empty in your marriage.

* You think you have to choose between your spouse and your kids. If you do, you are comparing two different types of love. Living a balanced life doesn't require choosing.
* Your lives are very fragmented. You spend more time running here and there and doing this and that than you spend together.
* When together you both tend to be in your own little world.
* You both find yourself easily irritated over small annoyances.
* Disagreements and misunderstandings between the two of you increase.
* Several months pass before you realize the two of you haven't had a date or planned alone time together.

lack of consideration for the well being of the relationship
different prioities in life
no more attraction
no more activities together
no more future planning
(went through it not long ago, hang in there, things will get better)

when you wake up one morning and see your life every day from that point on and you don't like it, when you know you can be a better person without your spouse, when you are unhappy and you want to be happy again.
