I had my 1st child almost 4 months ago and weighted 179 lbs at the highest weight, I am now down to 147 lbs. Am I overweight still? I want and feel I need to lose weight but am not sure how much I should lose.

That weight is not bad for your height. You are just over the 'normal' weight for 5'3" (according to BMI charts) but you just had a baby!!! According to the chart, 'they' say you would have to lose 7 lbs to be in the 'normal' weight range. That's not much at all and most people I know are overweight by at least that much and they didn't just have a baby. It doesn't matter what the number is, it matters how you feel. If you feel you need to lose a few more pounds than go for it.

Normally, you will continue to lose weight anywhere from six months to a year after delivery. Breastfeeding helps with shedding post-pregnancy weight. If you ARE breastfeeding, be careful about dieting - you are still providing all of the nutrients your baby needs! If you're not breastfeeding, then look over the links others have provided and let that, along with advice from your doctor, help you set your weight-loss goals!

It really depends on your bone and muscle build. I just had my doctor write me a "healthy note" because I am 61 years old, 5 3", toned and in better shape these days, but added 3 lbs in the process. My BMI is now 26 but I have a 9 shoe size, over 8 ring size and 7.5 in wrist. I am a stocky build with solid muscle. Feeling great, but not 24.9 BMI!

To answer your question I found a Body Mass Index calculator on this NIH website:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/007196.htm

According to it, you are just slightly into the overweight range with a BMI of 26.04. So you would only need to lose just a few pounds to get into the normal range! Isn't that good news?

You just had a baby though!, anyway yes, you are overweight still... I think you should try loose at least 20 more pounds, however I don't blame you cuz YOU JUST HAD A BABY, give yourself a year at least to recover from the pregnancy.
