I live in Japan and drive to Camp Zama all the time. It's about 2 hrs away from the base where I live (Yokota AB). There is not much around Camp Zama itself from what I've seen, but living in Japan is a wonderful experience. This is our second time to live here, after we left the first time we immediately started putting in orders to come back and after 6 years we finally got to.
Like I said, there is not much around the immediate area of Camp Zama, (there is a navy base called Atsugi about a 30 min drive from Zama though) but there is a lot to see and do in Japan itself. Tokyo and Mt. Fuji are not that far away, and there are many amusement parks and historical places to visit.
All in all, I love living in Japan, but I guess it depends on what you and your spouse like. Alot of people come here and hate it because they never go off base and experience the sites and culture. All they seem to do is go to bars and they think that's all there is. If you come here, you won't regret it as long as you spend some time off base and experience all that Japan has to offer. Also the extra pay you get for having a high cost of living is nice......

Just depends on where your interests lie, really. Overseas moves are inherently stressful, but I have spent 7 years in Japan with the military (Marine Corps, not Army), and I would go back in a heartbeat. You can visit just about anywhere from there - MWR offers tours all over the world, from Egypt and Australia to Europe, and the country itself is awesome, especially mainland Japan. So long as you don't feel the need to restrict yourself to the base alone, either one is a good option.

Wow those are 2 great choices you're getting.
I'd have to go with Italy though. Japan is great with good food and Tokyo is indeed exciting with all sorts of things to do.
But Italy has pasta! And I'm a sucker for all things pasta!
The weather seems to be similar to Japan.

depends on what you like. japan is sooo crowded and people aren't as outgoing as the italians. both places have good food. weather is warmer in italy (in general). sooo expensive to live in japan but italy ain't cheap, either. people are sooo polite in japan but more fun in italy (in my opinion).

I'd loooove to visit Japan; however, if I'd have the choice, I'd move to Italy in a heartbeat. Plus, there it'll be much easier to visit other countries, all of Europe, that is...

I would choose Italy as well. For two adults it would be a great opportunity to be able to visit museums, other countries for a long weekend, and even explore small quiet restaurants. Japan can wait...
