the farther away from the axe head the better - by maximizing the arc of the swing you will generate more force

The real 'issue' for an axe is kinetic energy (KE). Since KE = (1/2)(mass)(acceleration)*2, you can see that increasing the speed of the head of the axe is the key to maximizing its kinetic energy (doubling the speed gives 4 times [the speed is squared in the equation] the KE). Swinging the axe from the end will offer the greatest increase in speed and therefore the greatest KE.

Best wishes.

To get the most force, you would want to swing the ax by holding it at the end.

You get the most velocity and therefore the most force on impact if you hold the end of the handle furthest from the blade.

Try chopping a tree down just holding the blade, what a joke.

Hold it at the end because the heavy end of the axe travels farther and gains more momentum.

most force at the end. but the most accurate cutting aid would be at the stem. but those that use them would have worked out the balance to the 'right tool for the job' equation and therefore adjusted accordingly. so somewhere in the middle most likely varying to the middle to long end would make sense we are learning creatures.

with your left hand on the butt of the Axe handle and your right hand at the head of the Axe, push up and off with your right hand sliding your right hand down to meet your left hand that had been left in place in a forward swinging-motion, you will develop the mightiest swing possible with an Axe...

at the end, just like a baseball bat. Since this is the physics category you should know all that leverage and fulcrum stuff.
